LIMAUK
has finally elected a new interim government on july 3rd 2010 in
Birmingham after a long debate over what is said to have been a controversial
proposal
made by the election commission. This proposal sparks a serious discontent
amongst LIMAUK’s members. Some members expressed solemn dissatisfaction
over the proposal through LIMAUK’s list serv. Some went as far as threatening
to quit their various positions or resign from the organisation if
the election commission does not reconsider its decision. Some referred
to it as discriminatory
and that it had the tendency of destroying the organisation. However,
a position statement was later made on behalf of the election commission
by one of its
members stressing that their mandate was made with no malice and it
was not intended to divide the organisation but, was made in the best
interest of
LIMAUK. The three-man commission was appointed in May 2010 by Mr. Musa
Konneh, the then president of LIMAUK, to oversee the activities of
the forth coming
election.
The commission later reconsidered its decision and call for all
limaukans to cooperate and exercise a peaceful resolution to
issues. A declaration
was made by the election commission to extend the deadline for individuals
wishing to express their interest in the run for presidency. The
deadline came and past shockingly; no one came up as a potential
candidate for the
post.
An immediate teleconference was organised in order to discuss the
future of the organisation. Obviously, there were certain disagreements
but, most
of all it was agreed to put in place an interim government which
was charged with the responsibility of restructuring the organisation,
reform the constitution
and prepare the organisation for the next general election.
July 3, 2010 saw members of LIMAUK going to the ballot for the election
of their interim leadership. Three individuals were nominated to
serve the post. Among them were Abrahim Sanoe of Stoke on trent, Mr. Musa
Konneh of
London and Samouka Dore of Sunderland.
The election of the interim leadership was overseen by Cheick Sheriff
and Theresa Foday. Nominees for the post were given five minutes
each to outline their manifesto. Abrahim Sanoe, commonly known
as AB5 promised a
fairer game for every member in LIMAUK and he added that there
will be an official social event every six month if he is elected
as interim
president. Samouka Dore on the other hand was straight forward
in his
quest of
becoming
an interim president of LIMAUK. He promised a total restructuring
of the organisation. He also outlined a mechanism that will enhance
the fund raising
strategy of the organisation. He lamented on networking with other
community organisations in order to improve community cohesion.
He mentioned the need
for LIMAUK to identify with fellow kinsmen back in Liberia. Mr.
Konneh didn’t
really have much to say; he thanked members for nominating him
for the post and promises his best for the organisation provided
the cooperation
of the
entire membership is given but, that was enough to clinch him victory
over his opponents. Mr. Konneh had a clear advantage over his opponents
because many believe that he will make a potential interim president
as he has done trementiously well in the past as a president for
LIMAUK.Samouka came next to him and Abrahim with the least
amount of votes.
After his election, Mr. Konneh vowed to carry out the mandate given
to him and promised to form his government in
the next two weeks. He added that he will welcome his opposition
to work along
side
his government. The interim government which is meant to last for
12 months will pave the road for the next general election.
